About Me
I’m Ruchira Liyanage, an architect and researcher with a strong focus on sustainable design and innovation. Currently, I’m completing my Master’s in Sustainable Architecture at Tampere University in Finland, building on a solid foundation from my studies in architecture at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. My experience spans working as a project architect, where I had the chance to engage in various architectural projects that blend design with sustainability and innovative urban planning.
In my research, I’m particularly interested in how natural systems can inspire more energy-efficient and sustainable architectural solutions. I’ve also had the opportunity to collaborate on several interdisciplinary projects, competitions, and public presentations, which allowed me to explore new ideas and push the boundaries of sustainable design.
I’ve also enjoyed teaching and getting involved in community projects, where I focus on using design as a tool for creating positive environmental and societal change. My work is all about blending creativity, research, and sustainability to make a lasting impact.

Dissertation: Exploring an “Ecomimicry” Approach for High-rise Residential Developments in Sri Lanka. This was completed in fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Architecture Honours. It explores the application of an ecomimicry approach to high-rise residential developments in warm, humid climates. The research examines how natural systems can inform sustainable design to mitigate urban energy waste and improve thermal comfort. By incorporating vegetation into building design, the study found increased energy efficiency but also identified challenges with thermal comfort due to impaired nocturnal heat loss. The findings highlight the need for a holistic ecomimicry framework to enhance overall sustainability in high-rise residential buildings. Link:https://dms.uom.lk/s/wfgBD88qqWpTYSm (February 2020)
